In reaction to the NHS Ten Year Health Plan, Vanessa Wilson, CEO of University Alliance said:
“The government’s NHS Ten Year Heath Plan represents a significant stride forward in meeting the country’s evolving healthcare needs.
“It’s encouraging to see recognition that nurses and allied health professionals must be highly trained. Unfortunately, this is at odds with the recent removal of apprenticeship levy funding for the high-level healthcare apprenticeships. We’ll be engaging with the updated workforce plan to understand how advanced healthcare training, and especially the 2,000 new nursing apprenticeships, will be funded.
“We also welcome the plan’s focus on innovation and collaboration. Alliance universities, as key players in healthcare research, education and skills, should be central to delivering the plan. To grow the domestic workforce, government must work closely with universities to tackle falling applicant numbers and limited placements, and improve long-term planning for local workforce needs.
“A refreshed workforce plan must fully involve schools, universities, and colleges to align policies across health, social care, education and skills. Without long-term sustainable funding for training and a credible implementation strategy, today’s plan risks falling short.”
